On a level Bridgewater lot the waterfall height has to be constructed, usually from the soil that comes out of the pond excavation. Done carelessly that produces the familiar mound of rock sitting in a lawn. Done properly the berm is wider than it needs to be, planted through, and tied into an existing bed or tree line so the rise reads as part of the garden rather than as a pile.

That approach also sets the maximum sensible fall height. On flat ground, a three- to four-foot drop built across a generous, planted berm looks right; an eight-foot tower does not, no matter how good the rockwork is. We would rather build a stream with length than a waterfall with height here.

Raritan Valley soils run heavy to clay, and the ground near the river and its tributaries holds water. Clay is fine to build in, but it holds moisture against the outside of the liner and it does not drain excavation spoil the way sandy soil does. We plan perimeter drainage and gravel bedding accordingly, and on wetter sites we lift the pond edge slightly above surrounding grade so storm runoff sheds away from the pond rather than into it.

Runoff management is not cosmetic. Lawn fertiliser washing into a koi pond after a storm is one of the most common causes of an algae bloom in a well-built pond, and it is almost entirely preventable at the design stage.

An open Bridgewater lot means the pond surface takes sun most of the day. Warm water holds less oxygen and grows algae faster, so surface coverage matters: hardy water lilies across a good share of the surface, generous biological filtration, and a waterfall or aerator that keeps the water moving and gassing off through July and August.

The compensation is that sun-loving plants genuinely thrive here in a way they cannot in a shaded Union County yard. Lilies bloom hard, marginals fill in fast, and the pond looks established in its first full season.
