Koi Ponds & Water Features in Summit, NJ
Custom koi ponds, pondless waterfalls, and fountainscapes — designed, built, and maintained for Summit homeowners.
Summit is a dense, established town on the Second Watchung ridge: deep mature landscaping, tight side yards, and neighbours close enough that the sound of moving water is the feature, not the view. Garden State Koi designs compact ecosystem ponds, pondless waterfalls, and fountainscapes that fit Summit lots as they really are.
Garden State Koi is a dedicated water feature company serving Union County and central New Jersey from our Warwick, NY design center and retail store — ponds and waterfalls are all we do, not a landscaping sideline.
Summit is about 70 to 80 minutes from Warwick, NY via Route 17 and I-78.
Water Features in Summit
Most Summit back yards are a quarter to a half acre, framed by decades-old plantings and overlooked from a rear porch or kitchen window. The right feature here is not the biggest one that fits. It is the one you hear from the porch and see from the sink.
We publish regional galleries rather than town-by-town project lists, so we will not imply Summit installs we cannot show you. We are happy to talk through exactly what we would do on your lot instead.
Summit is in Union County, NJ, part of Union County and central New Jersey. Don't see your town? Call 845-651-4100.
We serve Summit on the same Union County route as Westfield, Scotch Plains, Mountainside, Berkeley Heights, Cranford, New Providence, Fanwood.
Scale and Siting on a Summit Lot
On a half-acre Summit property, a 6-by-8 or 8-by-11 ecosystem pond with a short, energetic waterfall reads far better than a large pond pressed against a property line. Compact does not mean compromised: the filtration, skimmer, and circulation are the same professional components, just sized to the water volume.
Siting matters more than size. We place the feature where it is seen and heard from where you actually spend time, and we angle the falls so the sound carries toward the patio rather than toward the neighbour's bedroom window. On a lot this close-knit that is a real design decision, not a detail.
Access Decides the Build
Summit is where equipment access most often sets the plan. Four- or five-foot side yards, no rear gate, mature root systems, and shared driveways are all common. We survey the route to the back yard before quoting, so the price reflects the machine that can genuinely get there. Where nothing can, we build with compact equipment and more labour, which costs more hours and we say so up front.
Being on the Second Watchung ridge, some Summit yards also carry real slope and traprock. Where they do, we take advantage: a short run of stream down an existing bank beats a built berm every time.
Shade, Leaves, and Municipal Water
Summit's tree canopy is one of the reasons people live there, and it is the single biggest maintenance variable for a pond in town. Deep shade rules out most water lilies, so we plant irises, rushes, and oxygenators instead. Autumn leaf fall is heavy enough that netting and a properly sized skimmer are essential rather than optional, and our fall closing service exists largely for yards like these.
Summit is on municipal water, so top-off is easy but chlorinated. Anything beyond a small top-off needs dechlorinator, and we cover that in the handover so nobody learns it the hard way.

Summit FAQ
Can a koi pond fit in a Summit, NJ back yard?
Yes. Compact 6-by-8 and 8-by-11 ecosystem ponds are designed for exactly this kind of lot, and a smaller pond with a well-placed waterfall suits a mature Summit landscape better than an oversized one.
What if there is no equipment access to my Summit yard?
We check the access route before quoting. Where a machine cannot reach, we build with compact equipment and more hands. It costs more in labour hours, so we price it honestly rather than surprising you.
Will heavy shade ruin a pond in Summit?
No, but it changes the planting. Water lilies need sun, so in shaded Summit yards we use irises, pickerel rush, sedges, and submerged oxygenators, and we size the skimmer for a serious autumn leaf load.
Do you service ponds in Summit that you didn't build?
Yes. Spring openings, fall closings and netting, leak detection from $398, pump and filter replacement, and full renovations, whoever installed the pond.
