Morris County is Highlands country. Excavation here regularly hits glacial cobble and, in the western townships, shallow bedrock within a few feet of grade. That is not a problem for a properly designed pond, but it does change the plan: we set depth and shelf geometry after we see what the ground gives us, and we would rather build a slightly shallower pond with excellent filtration than blast for depth nobody sees.

The upside is dramatic. When a lot already falls six or eight feet across the back yard, a stream and waterfall can be built with real length and real sound instead of a mounded berm that looks imported. A lot of our favourite Morris County designs are streams first and ponds second.

Western Morris — Chester, Mendham, Long Valley, Harding — is horse-farm and acreage country. Properties are frequently one to five acres, wells are common, and there is room for a large ecosystem pond, a recreational pond, or a stream that runs for fifty feet. Deer pressure is heavy, which affects plant selection more than most homeowners expect.

Eastern Morris — Madison, Chatham, Morristown, Denville — is older and tighter. Quarter- to half-acre lots, mature oaks and maples, and narrow side-yard access that decides what equipment can reach the back. Those yards suit compact ecosystem ponds, pondless waterfalls, and fountainscapes, and they need a skimmer sized for a serious autumn leaf load.

Several Morris County municipalities review grading, wetlands buffers, and steep-slope disturbance before a larger excavation, and some HOAs have their own say. We flag anything that looks like it needs municipal sign-off during the design consultation rather than on install day. Call 811 for utility mark-out is standard on every job we run.

Water source matters here too. On well properties we design for a slower top-off and plan the spring fill around the well's recovery rate, which is a genuinely different conversation than a municipal-water yard in Madison.
