Free Pond Water Testing
Bring a sample of your pond water to the Warwick store and the team will test it for free while you wait. No appointment needed. It is the quickest way to find out why a pond has turned green, why fish are sulking at the bottom, or whether the water is ready for new fish.
What the test covers
- Ammonia, from fish waste and decaying debris. Any reading above zero is a warning sign.
- Nitrite, the next stage of the nitrogen cycle, and also harmful to fish.
- Nitrate, the end product. Less toxic, but high levels feed algae.
- pH, how acidic or alkaline the water is.
- KH (carbonate hardness), which buffers pH and stops it swinging.
How to take a good sample
Use a clean plastic bottle or jar with a lid that has been rinsed well with plain water, never soap. Fill it from below the surface, away from the waterfall and fresh top-up water, so the sample reflects the pond itself. A standard drinking-water bottle is plenty. Bring it in on the same day you collect it and keep it out of the heat.
What the results tell you
The team will walk you through the numbers and what they point to: whether your filter is keeping up, whether you are feeding or stocking too heavily, or whether the pond needs a partial water change. Results are a snapshot, not a diagnosis, so bring notes on what you are seeing and when it started.
Sizing a Pond or Waterfall Pump
Buying the wrong pump is the most expensive mistake we see at the counter. Too small and the waterfall trickles and the filter cannot keep up. Too large and you pay for electricity you do not need. Three numbers decide the right pump.
1. Pond volume
Multiply length by width by average depth in feet, then multiply by 7.48 to get gallons. A 10 by 15 foot pond averaging 2 feet deep holds about 2,244 gallons. As a starting point, most ponds want the whole volume moved through the filter at least once an hour.
2. Waterfall width
For a waterfall, the width of the spill matters more than the pond size. A common rule of thumb is around 1,500 gallons per hour for each foot of waterfall width for a medium flow, less for a gentle trickle and more for a heavy sheet of water. A 2 foot wide spillway at a medium flow wants roughly 3,000 gallons per hour.
3. Head height and pipe run
A pump's rating is its flow with no lift. Every foot of height between the pond surface and the top of the waterfall (the head) reduces the flow it actually delivers, and so does every length of pipe and every fitting along the way. A rough allowance is one extra foot of head for every 10 feet of pipe. Always read the pump's flow chart at your real total head, not the number on the front of the box.

Pond Liner and Underlayment
Sizing a liner
To work out liner size, take the pond's maximum length and add twice the maximum depth, plus about two feet for overlap around the edges. Do the same for the width. A 10 by 15 foot pond that is 2 feet deep at its deepest needs a liner of roughly 16 by 21 feet. Measure over any shelves and contours, not straight across, and round up rather than down.
Why underlayment matters
Underlayment is a tough fabric that goes under the liner, and on top of it in areas that will carry heavy rock. It protects against sharp stones, roots and burrowing animals that can puncture a liner from below. It costs little compared with the liner and far less than finding a leak later.
Repair or replace?
A single puncture or tear in otherwise healthy liner can usually be patched. Liner that has gone brittle, cracks when folded, or has multiple leaks is often better replaced. Before you buy anything, make sure the leak is actually in the liner: many water losses come from a waterfall edge, a skimmer seal or a settled stream bank. Water Treatments: What to Reach For
Treatments support a healthy pond; they do not replace good filtration, sensible stocking and regular maintenance. Test first so you know what you are treating.
Beneficial bacteria
Beneficial bacteria break down fish waste, excess food and organic debris. They are most useful when a pond is opened in spring, after cleaning, and after adding fish. They work best once the water has warmed, so read the temperature guidance on the product.
Dechlorinator
Municipal tap water is usually treated with chlorine or chloramine, both harmful to fish. Use a dechlorinator whenever you top up or refill from the tap. Well water does not normally need it, but it can carry other issues worth testing for.
Algae control
Green water and string algae are symptoms of excess nutrients and sunlight. Algaecides can knock algae back, but the lasting fixes are adequate filtration, more plant cover, fewer fish or less feeding. Always follow the label, check whether a product is safe with fish and plants, and ask the team if you are not sure which product suits your pond.
