Spring Pond Maintenance Checklist for NY Homeowners

Spring is the most important time of year for your koi pond. After a long New York winter, your pond needs proper attention to ensure a healthy, clear season ahead. Here's the complete spring opening checklist from our maintenance team.

    When to Open Your Pond

In the NY tri-state area, most ponds should be opened between mid-March and mid-April, once water temperatures consistently reach 50°F. Don't rush it — opening too early can stress your fish.

    Step 1: Remove Winter Equipment

Remove de-icers, aerators, and any winter netting. Inspect equipment for damage before storing.

    Step 2: Drain and Clean

A full drain-and-clean is recommended annually. This involves pumping out the pond water, removing fish to a holding tank, pressure washing rocks and gravel, removing accumulated debris, and refilling with fresh water treated with a dechlorinator.

    Step 3: Inspect Equipment

Check your pump, skimmer, and BioFalls filter. Clean filter mats and media. Replace any worn parts. Ensure all plumbing connections are secure.

    Step 4: Restart the Ecosystem

Add beneficial bacteria to jump-start biological filtration. Add a dechlorinator if using tap water. Turn on the pump and waterfall. Monitor water clarity over the next few days.

    Step 5: Reintroduce Fish

Acclimate fish slowly by floating them in bags to equalize temperature. Begin feeding small amounts once water temperature is consistently above 50°F. Use cold-water fish food (wheat germ-based) until temperatures reach 60°F.

    Step 6: Add Plants

Divide and repot hardy water lilies. Add new marginal plants. Floating plants like hyacinth and water lettuce can be added once water warms above 60°F.
